Types of Musculoskeletal Pain

What is musculoskeletal pain?
Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common types of acute or chronic pain. It is a specific type of pain that affects muscles and joints, and is most often felt in your:
- Joints
- Muscles
- Bones
- Ligaments
Types of musculoskeletal pain
Here are the common types of musculoskeletal pain:
- Joint Pain: It is frequently accompanied by stiffness and inflammation, and patients often find relief with rest. It can be caused by many health conditions or injuries.
- Muscle Pain: This pain is often related to overuse, tension, or muscle injury caused by hard physical exercise. It is caused by specific muscles and starts during or after the activity, often leading to musculoskeletal back pain.
- Ligament and Tendon Pain: Ligament and tendon pain is often less intense as compared to bone pain. It can be described as a sharp pain, especially caused by the stretching of the affected ligament or tendon.
- Nerve Pain: Nerve pain, also known as neuropathic pain, refers to a type of pain that originates from damaged or malfunctioning nerves.
What causes musculoskeletal pain?
Common causes of musculoskeletal pain include:
- Injuries: Accidents, sports injuries, or heavy lifting can cause strains, sprains, bone fractures, and other issues that lead to musculoskeletal pain.
- Overuse / repetitive injuries
- Direct blows to muscles, bone or ligaments
- Joint dislocation
- Sprains
- Poor Posture / Biomechanics: desk jobs or use technology for long hours, and poor posture is a leading cause of back, neck, and shoulder pain.
- Weakness of the muscles
- Wear and tear
- Aging Population: As the population ages, age-related degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis become more common, leading to chronic musculoskeletal pain.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can weaken muscles and joints, leading to stiffness and pain, particularly in the back and legs.
- Obesity: Being overweight puts additional strain on the joints, especially the knees and hips, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis and chronic pain.
Symptoms of musculoskeletal pain
Common symptoms of musculoskeletal pain:
- Muscle discomfort / tenderness caused by a cramp or forceful muscle contraction, often known as a charley horse, can be intense and brief, with the muscle often twitching or contracting.
- Tendon pain can be excruciating if it is caused by an injury. It usually gets worse when you move or stretch the damaged tendon and gets better when you relax.
- Joint discomfort feels like a dull ache. It may be accompanied by stiffness and swelling.
- Tingling, pins and needles, or burning sensations may accompany acute compression pain.
Other musculoskeletal pain symptoms may include:
- stiffness and ache
- oedema and erythema
- a popping or cracking sound in the joint; difficulty moving the afflicted area
- weakness
- bruises whilst sleeping from muscle spasms or twitches
Treatment of Musculoskeletal Pain
An accurate diagnosis is the key to developing a treatment strategy. Don’t allow invasive treatments until a diagnosis, or at least a differential diagnosis, is concluded.
Pain Assessment Tools
Assessing different types of pain accurately is crucial for effective management strategies. Various tools exist that help healthcare professionals gauge a patient’s experience with pain:
- Numeric Rating Scale (NRS): Patients rate their pain on a scale from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst possible).
- Visual Analog Scale (VAS): Patients mark their level of discomfort on a line between two endpoints representing no pain and worst imaginable pain.
- McGill Pain Questionnaire: This tool assesses multiple dimensions of the patient’s experience with descriptors ranging from sensory to affective qualities.
Each tool offers insights into how patients perceive their discomfort and helps inform treatment decisions.
