Metal Allergy in Shoulder Replacement

If you have a metal allergy or sensitivity, it doesn’t mean getting a metal implant like a shoulder or elbow replacement—or nails, plates, and screws—is completely off limits. It also doesn’t mean your body will reject the implant. Overall, reactions to surgical implants are rare, but they do sometimes occur.

Which Metals Are Commonly Used in Orthopaedic Surgery?

  • Cobalt-chrome
  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium

Some orthopedic implants contain small amounts of nickel and chrome, and there is concern that this may be an issue for patients with sensitivities to these metals.

Nickel

10%–15% of the general population is sensitive or allergic to nickel. Itching and redness from costume jewelry can be an indicator of sensitivity. If that includes you, be sure to inform your healthcare provider.

In some cases, alternative materials such as titanium or ceramics may be used. However, this is not always possible, and an implant containing nickel may still be the most appropriate option depending on your condition.

What Are The Symptoms of a Metal Allergy?

Pain around the site of an orthopedic implant can have many causes, including loosening or infection. A thorough evaluation is necessary. Symptoms of metal sensitivity are not always clearly defined but may include:

  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Numbness

Additional Considerations

Each patient’s situation is unique. If you suspect a metal allergy or have had reactions in the past, your physician may recommend testing or discuss alternative implant materials. Careful planning helps ensure the safest and most effective outcome for your procedure.
